Anybody know what kind of bird this is wandering around our backyard? It seems like a kind of a woodpecker or kingfisher?

because of the long pointy beak i think it is a woodpecker, but i haven't come across pictures of any that look exactly like him. None of them seem to have the mohawk goin on top of the head. He is very pretty though.
you should shoot it and then stuff it as a memoir from your mission
